FRETBOARD PRACTICE

Guitar Fretboard Note Trainer

Find notes, chords and scales on the neck

Choose a root pool

About this trainer

Master the fretboard by shape. Pick a root pool, then a challenge — single note, triads, or pentatonic scales — and find every spot on a 22-fret board where its tones live. The root is marked R; the other tones show their interval from the root in semitones. Real-time pluck synthesis (Karplus-Strong) gives audio feedback for every press.

How to play

  1. Pick a root pool — Natural or Chromatic — then a challenge (single note, triad, or pentatonic).
  2. A target appears at the top — a root note plus the challenge (e.g. C minor triad).
  3. Tap every fret that belongs to it — including open strings (the dashed rings near the nut). The root shows R; the other tones show their interval from the root (e.g. minor triad = R 3 7).
  4. Find them all to set a new best time. Wrong taps flash red and show that note's interval from the root.

FAQ

Why memorize the fretboard?

Fluency on the neck unlocks improvisation, transcribing by ear, and applying music theory practically.

How long does it take?

With 5 minutes of daily practice, most learners feel comfortable with the first 12 frets in 2–4 weeks.

Is the audio a real guitar recording?

No — it is generated in real time in your browser using the Karplus-Strong algorithm.

Can I use this on my phone?

Yes. The layout auto-rotates: horizontal on desktop, vertical (chord-diagram style) on phones.

Does it work for left-handed guitar?

Not yet. A left-handed mode is on the roadmap.
